Introduction to Drawing

This introductory drawing course is designed to build foundational skills through hands-on practice and exploration of essential techniques. Students will learn how to properly use drawing tools, understand core methods, and apply them to dynamic still life compositions.

 By the end of the course, participants will have developed a series of finished works using multiple shading approaches.

Week 1: Introduction to Drawing

  • Meet the instructor and an overview of the program

  • Introduction to drawing tools, supplies, and papers

  • Exploration of popular drawing techniques and when to apply them in your work

Week 2: Still Life Foundations

  • Learn how to set up a strong and engaging still life scene

  • Apply Week 1 techniques to create a still life drawing from a pre-arranged setup provided by the instructor

Week 3: Crosshatching in Still Life

  • Explore the art of crosshatch shading

  • Create a still life drawing emphasizing form and depth through crosshatching techniques

Week 4: Stippling in Still Life

  • Learn stipple shading to enhance texture and visual interest

  • Complete a dynamic still life artwork using stippling techniques

Start Date: Saturday, October 4

Time: 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Tuition: $140/month (4 one-hour classes)

Materials Needed

  • Drawing pencils (variety of hardness)

  • Erasers (kneaded and standard)

  • Sketchbook or drawing paper (instructor will advise on size/weight)

  • Ruler, sharpener, and additional materials as suggested by the instructor

  • Note: As a convenience, Jewell Tone can supply a starter supply kit that consists of: 18-Piece Professional Sketch Pencil Set, Sketch and Drawing paper,  Premium Heavy-Weight Charcoal Sketchbook, and Willow Charcoal Sticks, Willow Charcoal for Sketching, Drawing, Shading, and Fine Art (2-4mm,4-5mm,5-7mm,7-9mm). The Cost Per Student is $25.00 for each kit payable at the beginiing of the class. 

Meet your Instructor – Dominic Roebuck

Dominic Roebuck is a well-known local artist who works full-time creating and teaching art. He specializes in technical drawing and painting techniques, working with graphite, charcoal, oil paints, and oil pastels. Dominic’s signature style blends realistic detail with a surreal, almost ethereal quality that makes his work instantly recognizable.

In this course, Dominic will guide students through a rich combination of beginner, intermediate, and advanced drawing and composition skills. With these techniques, you’ll learn how to create artwork that captures attention and inspires appreciation.

All experience levels are welcome—whether you’re just starting out or looking to refine your craft, Dominic’s instruction will meet you where you are and help you grow as an artist.
